Aug 08 - Further Music Festival Acts Announced

gib-music-festival-pngThe Ministry of Culture is proud to announce that Scottish rock band Texas will be performing at the Gibraltar Music Festival (GMF) on September 7th. Two further big names doing well in the UK charts today are also confirmed; Lawson & Gabrielle Aplin!

Texas have sold well in excess of 20 million albums to date, including three Number One albums, and 16 Top 20 singles, including Say What You Want and Summer Son. After a short break, the band – fronted by the soulful rock chick, Sharleen Spiteri – is proving that it’s still got plenty to talk and sing about, 25 years on.

Lawson are a four-piece pop band from Liverpool. Their debut album Chapman Square hit number four in the charts and all five singles released to date have charted in the Top 20, including Taking Over Me and Brokenhearted.

Gabrielle Aplin rose to fame as the voice of a John Lewis advert on which she covered “The Power of Love”. Her cover of the Frankie Goes to Hollywood classic went all the way to number one. The singer-songwriter from Wiltshire has followed that up with another two Top 20 hits, Please Don’t Say You Love Me and Panic Cord.

Texas, Lawson and Gabrielle Aplin will join Emeli Sandé, Olly Murs, Level 42 and La Oreja de Van Gogh on the Main Stage on Saturday 7th of September. A GMF spokesperson said, “We are really excited about bringing so many talented acts to Gibraltar, they’re going to put on an unforgettable show!”

With 12-hours of music on offer, three local bands will also perform on the Main Stage. The public will have their chance to choose their favourite local band very soon, with more information to be released before the weekend.

English rock band 10cc are also added to the bill for the Gibraltar Music Festival. The group enjoyed its greatest commercial success in the 1970s, and boasts 12 top 10 hits, including three Number Ones (Dreadlock Holiday, Rubber Bullets and I’m Not In Love) and will headline the Radio Gibraltar Stage at the festival (the second of the festival’s four stages).

The Ministry of Culture, along with producers Word of Mouth and Axle Media, have promised an event for all the family. A GMF spokesperson said, “We are delighted to add a second ‘golden oldie’ to an already very strong bill!”

Supporting 10cc are Propellers – a young, upcoming indy pop/rock band from Kent in England. Propellers are destined for greatness; signed to global management company Red Light Management (who manage stars like Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand, and Alicia Keys) they have recently made waves at Scotland’s T in the Park festival and enjoyed airplay on BBC Radio 1.

The GMF team is also proud to reveal that Guy Valarino will bring his acoustic pop/rock to The Radio Gibraltar Stage. Guy is a talented local singer songwriter who has been touring the UK and Europe with his Couch Surf Tour. When asked about the GMF he said: “It's always going to be really exciting to get to be on the same bill as any current international act, but to be asked to do this in my hometown, alongside so many household names makes it so much better! Can't wait!"

Local ‘kings of covers’ Afterhours and the Gaucin based rock band The Bank will also form part of the line-up on The Radio Gibraltar Stage.

A spokesperson for Radio Gibraltar said, “we are delighted to partner with the Gibraltar Music Festival in continuing to provide our listeners with the very best in latest hits and classic songs”. Performances on the Radio Gibraltar Stage will complement performances on the Main Stage providing non-stop live music throughout the day.

This year the GMF has grown significantly; offering 12 hours of live music and entertainment across numerous stages, a food court, and a shaded rest & recharge area. “What we are planning is a full day of entertainment suitable for the whole family,” a spokesperson said.
