Oct 11 - Inauguration Of The Peter Isola Promenade

11 October 2016

The Peter Isola Promenade was inaugurated today by the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and the family of the late Peter Isola.

The walk way connects Coaling Island to the Mid Harbours Marina, and Mr Isola’s wife Rosie and her family including the Minister Alert Isola were there to unveil the road name.

Mrs Isola said it was a great honour for the family to hear that her husband’s political achievements were going to be recognised by the people of Gibraltar.

“He did a lot of work for Gibraltar, and although he was always arguing with Sir Joshua Hassan, when it came to Gibraltar they did very well. They went to the United Nations together and here we all are today,” she added.

Mr Picardo said: “Peter Isola is a man who served Gibraltar with great distinction in the late 60s and the early 70s, and was a Member of Parliament, but most importantly, just like Sir Joshua Hassan, he was the other great Gibraltarian who represented Gibraltar at the United Nations during the difficult time in the 1960s when Spain were particularly aggressive towards Gibraltar.

“This came to mind because although Albert is in Government now, Peter formed an important part of Gibraltar’s community, and we thought it was the right time to name this important promenade after Peter to recognise the work that he did during his lifetime.

“The family was delighted to hear the promenade would be named after Peter, and after working with the planning department and the Royal Gibraltar Post Office, we are here today.”
