May 31 - New Footpath Welcomed By Governor's Street Businesses And Residents
A Governor's Street hairdressing salon owner popped out of her shop and personally thanked Paul Balban, the Minister for Infrastructure and Planning, for the new footpath constructed outside her business.
Brigitte Parody popped her head out to thank the Minister as he inspected the finished work this morning.
The footpath is the latest development which forms part of the Government's Sustainable Transport, Traffic and Parking Plan. These enhancements consist of the construction of the western pavement and road resurfacing from its junction with Prince Edward’s Road to Library Ramp.
A spokesman for Number Six said: "The STTPP’s vision statement promotes sustainable modes of travel that minimise adverse impact on the environment and promote healthier lifestyles. Its main aim is to improve environmental conditions for the community, to increase accessibility to facilities and services and to encourage healthier travel choices and thereby improving quality of life. The simplest mode of transport is walking and the Traffic Plan is intent on enhancing pedestrian routes wherever possible.

"In the case of Governor’s Street, access to the properties and businesses in the area was extremely difficult and dangerous, given that there was no footpath at the entrance to a residence and a place of business, leading off from a main traffic artery from the upper town. These improvements have addressed this problem providing a safe, segregated route for pedestrians, residents and visitors to the area. As part of the works and in an attempt to maintain and improve on street parking, motorcycle parking bays were relocated to an area opposite Library Ramp.
"This section of road was notorious for its lack of pavement. Residents and users of businesses along this side of the road have traditionally had to take a great deal of care when entering and leaving their properties or accessing businesses."
Mr Balban said: “It gives me great pleasure to see the completion of these improvements which will now improve safety for a number of residents and businesses. By removing the parking of motorbikes on the east pavement, this busy road is now wider and safer for the many vehicles that use it.
"Local residents and the owners of business premises are delighted with the improvements and have already written to tell me so.”
