Gibraltar Federation Of Sea Anglers Endorses Nautilus Project Video Raising Concerns Over Fireworks In Sea
31 October 2024

The Gibraltar Federation of Sea Anglers have endorsed a recent Nautilus Project video highlighting concerns over fireworks being thrown into the sea near the Detached Mole.
A statement continued: "The Gibraltar Federation of Sea Anglers endorses the Nautilus's Project publication of videos showing the pyrotechnics (fireworks) thrown into the sea by the Detached Mole. This is not acceptable and as they say, poses a danger to marine life.
"Although Nautilus has highlighted this issue, the Federation has been telling the government about the dumping of fireworks and other rubbish for years. Unfortunately, GFSA does not have the resources to pay for a diver and record what has been going on. Now, there is irrefutable evidence of what the Federation has been saying for years in the public domain.
"Before the last election, the site visit to the Detached Mole that GFSA had requested for over a year earlier finally took place. The intention was to show the unacceptable and parlous state that the mole was in at that time. The Minister for the Environment, together with departmental staff and members of the GFSA Committee, crossed over to the Detached Mole and were able to show and see at first hand the state of the Mole."
The Federation says that the Minister was "Lost for words". Following this, the GFSA noted that a barge permanently moored at the Detached Mole, along with equipment obstructing safe access at the south end, had been removed, facilitating local fishing clubs in hosting competitions.
A statement continued: "The Federation was promised action within 3 months by GSLP/Liberal Alliance if reelelected. GFSA received a written list of issues from the GSLP that they would tackle, but coming up to a year since the elections little or nothing has been done.
"The Federation, even when there was increasing pressure from its members to criticise this lack of action publicly, has not done so until now. It was seeking first to work cooperatively but to no avail.
"The Committee and its members feel that enough is enough and that we should now give voice to our grievances. Simply attending meetings with those responsible persons in Government with nothing tangible to show for the work we do behind the scenes leaves the Federation frustrated. GFSA wants actuon to be taken that will produce positive results and we call on the Government to act on its promises now."
