VE Day 80 – Lighting Of The Beacon Brazier

Gibraltar Cultural Services (GCS), on behalf of the Ministries of Culture and Tourism, will be holding a ceremony to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day at The Tower of Homage on Thursday 8th May 2025.
A statement from GCS follows below:
As a tribute to those who sacrificed so much during the years of WWII, the ceremony will include the lighting of the Beacon Brazier. The light from the flame will represent the ‘light of peace’ that emerged from the darkness of war.
The Beacon will be lit by Mrs Eileen Gordon, representing the Evacuation Generation, and Master Jack Pitto, the great grandson of the late Honourable Aurelio Montegriffo, one of the first 50 individuals who started the Gibraltar Defence Force (now the Royal Gibraltar Regiment), and who served as Minister in Gibraltar with Sir Joshua Hassan.
Minister for Culture & Tourism, the Hon Christian Santos GMD MP, will be leading the ceremony.
