Gibraltar Youth Service – Youth Symposium Tackles Gender Issues

The Youth Symposium, comprising young people from various NGOs and the Gibraltar Youth Service, convened on Thursday 15th May at the John Mackintosh Hall.
A statement from the Government follows below:
The session focused on exploring key gender-related topics, engaging participants in thoughtful and meaningful discussions.
Attendees examined the distinction between sex and gender, and how evolving transgender legislation intersects with women's rights and wider societal understanding. The group also reflected on the concepts of equality versus equity.
Career aspirations and progression pathways were discussed, with an emphasis on challenging gender stereotypes and creating inclusive opportunities for all career interests.
Childcare access emerged as a significant theme. Participants considered the pros and cons of public versus private nurseries, the implications of means testing and taxation, and the broader impact on working parents and employers.
The influence of social media on gender perceptions was also explored, including the rise of online misogyny. The discussion extended to how mobile phone control and digital spaces affect personal relationships and wellbeing.
The session concluded with a focus on health-related gender issues, particularly postpartum depression, highlighting the need for greater awareness and improved access to support services.
We extend our thanks to the Ministry of Equality for their participation, as well as to Analise Benitez from Bayside School and Maxine Porro from Prior Park School.
