Gibraltar Rolls Out New Tool To Help The Building Sector Deliver On Net Zero Commitments

The Government has been working with climate tech company IES to deliver a bespoke Dynamic Simulation Modelling (DSM) tool which will help building professionals in Gibraltar to meet the increasingly stringent targets for energy performance in new buildings.

A statement from the Government follows below:

The tool hasbeen funded via theClimateAction Fund and represents a significant step inGibraltar’s journey towards delivering a truly net-zero building stock.

Gibraltar has a hot Mediterranean climate and a highly built up urban environment with limited space for solar panels, making it extremely difficult to meet net-zero targets without the kind of insight that dynamic thermal simulation offers.

In comparison to the current, simplified building compliance tool, DSM allows for the evaluation of all aspects ofthe building design via a high-resolution, hourly simulation.Vincent Murray, associate director at IES explains that “In practical terms, that’s what makes the difference between an aspirational target and a building that genuinely produces as much energy as it consumes.” The software is now available via the IES website and a demonstration of the software will be given at the Aspire conference.

Minister for the Environment, the Hon Prof. John Cortes, said: “As we continue to demand more from our building professionals in order to meet our climate goals itis important to equip them with the tools necessary to be able to comply with new requirements and to demonstrate that compliance. This new tool bridges that gap.”

The Aspire conference on a sustainable built environment takes place tomorrow and will further explore the use of technology in delivering on climate targets as well as discussing existing barriers to change and looking ahead to what a truly sustainable city might look like in the context of Gibraltar.
