Gibraltar Launches First-Ever Active Travel Month This September

Active Travel Month, running from 1st–30th September, aims to inspire individuals, businesses, schools and community groups to replace short car journeys with walking or cycling.
A statementy from OTWO Magazine folllows below:
Organised by OTWO Magazine, the Sustainable Transport Action Group (STAG) and the Gibraltar Netball Association ahead of the Netball World Youth Cup 2025, the campaign is supported by local
sponsor AMA Group and will raise funds for the Gibraltar Cardiac Association and Diabetes Gibraltar.
The concept is simple: replace car journeys with active ones, track your kilometres using the free Strava app either as an individual or as part of a team in workplaces, clubs or schools and compete for leaderboard positions. The challenge all about racking up as many active kilometres as possible with clubs competing for the top spots and public recognition across Gibraltar.
Partnering with local sustainability consultancy Asile Ltd, the campaign will also calculate total carbon emissions saved, giving participants a clear view of their collective environmental impact as well as health benefits.
Two public awareness events will take place:
∙ Friday 30th August – Piazza, 10 AM–2 PM
∙ Friday 6th September – ICC, 10 AM–2 PM
Visitors can register on the spot, get help joining via Strava, purchase raffle tickets and support the initative.
A group of local ambassadors has pledged support, including Stefan Borge (GBC), Ministers Dr. John Cortes, Gemma Arias-Vasquez, Christian Santos and Leslie Bruzon, Brenda Cuby (GibSams), Raul Mesa (Fitness expert), and Owen Smith (GFSB).
The month will close with an award ceremony announcing winners, who will receive trophies, media recognition, and community appreciation. Organisers emphasise the event is free, inclusive, and open to all—whether walking children to school, cycling to work, or enjoying a weekend jog.
“Let’s get Gibraltar moving this Sepetmeber. We invite all the community to come together and make a visible, measurable impact on our health and environment,” organisers said. "This September, we’re turning it into a fun challenge for everyone.’
For those interested in joining Active Travel Month, simply create a club and connect it to the official Active Travel Month Strava account to ensure fair and transparent tracking. We have attached user guides to this press release, and you can also follow our social media page OTWO Challenge for more instructions. The team is happy to meet with any company or club interested in joining and will gladly provide guidance along the way.
