Minister Cortes Visits Old Willis's Magazine Restoration Project On The Upper Rock

Minister for Heritage John Cortes recently visited the ongoing works at the former ‘City Under Siege’ site at Old Willis’s Magazine on the Upper Rock.
A statement from the Government follows below:
They were shown around the site by Chris Wright of Wrighttech, the company successful in the expression of interest process for the site and Manuel Jaén, the Gibraltar National Museum’s Conservator.
The Minister was able to see the remains of the tower recently re-discovered and the machicolation, a defensive feature built directly into the base of the tower, as well as the remarkable 18th Century graffiti which includes a whaling scene, likely observed in the Bay by soldiers stationed at the site.
Minister Cortes commented, “The restoration meticulously being carried out is impressive and will save for posterity features that could well have been lost forever. This will be a fascinating site to visit. It is just one example of the unprecedented amount of heritage restoration work that the Government is carrying out around Gibraltar.”
