Public Health Gibraltar Continues to Encourage Seasonal Vaccination Uptake for Winter

As we head into the colder months, Public Health Gibraltar is strongly encouraging everyone eligible to get their flu vaccine.
A statement continued: “The flu season is fast approaching, and it is especially important to protect yourself and those around you from serious illness. A simple vaccination can make a significant difference in staying healthy this winter.
“Last year, 66 people were admitted to hospital due to the flu: a sobering reminder that influenza is not just a mild seasonal inconvenience. The majority of these people were not immunised. For vulnerable groups, it can lead to severe complications such as pneumonia, a worsening of chronic health conditions, and, in some cases, even death. Vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent serious illness and reduce the spread of infection.”
Who is eligible for the flu vaccine?
The flu vaccine is free and recommended for the following groups in Gibraltar:
- Individuals aged 50 and over
- People with long-term health conditions, such as heart, lung, kidney, or neurological diseases, or those who care for someone with such conditions
- Pregnant women
- Healthcare and care workers
- Residents in long-term care facilities, including those within the Elderly Residential Services
Why the flu vaccine matters
Each year, flu viruses change slightly, which means that last year’s vaccine may no longer provide sufficient protection. The annual vaccine is carefully updated to match the most common circulating strains, offering the best defence against infection.
Where to get your vaccine
Flu vaccines are available through your GP. Walk-in clinics are available Monday to Friday between 1pm and 4pm or you can make an appointment by calling 200 52441.
A community effort
The Director of Public Health, Dr Helen Carter, reminds residents that “Vaccination is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your health and the wellbeing of our community. Every jab counts.”
Acting GHA Director General Lysandra Debono said: “It is the time of the year when we redouble our efforts to promote awareness about the importance of the flu vaccine. The vaccination process is quick, safe, and takes only a few minutes, but the protection it provides lasts all season long. Getting the jab can also help reduce pressure on Gibraltar’s healthcare system, preventing avoidable hospital admissions and allowing medical resources to be directed to those who need them most.”
Minister for Health and Care, Gemma Arias-Vasquez, said: “The vaccination campaign against flu is a significant, annual clinical deployment by the GHA. The public should know that by getting vaccinated, they are not only protecting themselves but also helping to shield those who may be more vulnerable, including family members, patients, and neighbours who rely on community immunity to stay safe. The sooner people get their flu vaccine the better to protect yourself and help keep Gibraltar healthy this winter.”
