Gibraltarians and their Language Reviewed in ‘English Language and Linguistics’ Journal

Gibraltarians and their Language: 22 Linguistic Biographies, the 2024 volume edited by Elena Seoane, Lucía Loureiro‑Porto, Cristina Suárez‑Gómez and Gibraltarian writer M. G. Sanchez, has been positively reviewed in English Language and Linguistics, a leading international journal published by Cambridge University Press.
The review, written by Betsy Ruth Rymes, Professor of Educational Linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania, highlights the book’s contribution to documenting Gibraltar’s multilingual reality through first‑person accounts. Rymes describes the collection as “a thoroughly enjoyable way to absorb the themes about Gibraltarian speakers woven through the pages.”
She also emphasises the book’s relevance for researchers, educators and anyone interested in linguistic diversity, stating that she “strongly recommend[s] this book to all who have professional or personal interest in Gibraltarian language or any form of linguistic diversity, and to teachers and professors who want to convey the importance of linguistic biography as both a research method and a form of writing.”
Published by the Servizo de Publicacións of the Universidade de Vigo, the volume brings together 22 individual narratives that explore how language, identity and community intersect in Gibraltar, offering a detailed portrait of the territory’s linguistic landscape.
