Apr 09 - Sustainable Traffic Plan – Data Collection Period to Heavily Involve the Public

press callAs part of the Government’s on-going Sustainable Traffic plan, the Department of Traffic will be carrying out a 10 week data collection period that will include volunteers from a number of Government departments carrying out roadside interviews with vehicle drivers, pedestrians and those taking public transport. They will also carry out door-to-door surveys.

The aim of the data collection, insisted Minister for Traffic, Paul Balban, is to address a worsening problem that Gibraltar is too small for its amount of traffic. Also involved in the initiative are Ministers for the Environment and Tourism John Cortes and Neil Costa.

Speaking at a press conference this morning, Minister Balban noted that the survey period would commence as from the 15th April. Dr. Cortes pledged his commitment to improving the quality of air in Gibraltar. The eventual aim of the traffic plan is to encourage people to walk and take public transport.

Commenting on why it is important to involve the general public in the traffic plan, the Ministers added that as the traffic plan is an attempt to better traffic conditions for the public it’s only right that they are involved in the process.

Minister Balban stated that although the plan is set to take a number of years to be carried out, small changes will be seen soon. He added, that the feedback he’d received regarding the traffic light changes at Regal House was extremely positive.

Minister for Public Transport, Neil Costa explained that former changes made to bus routes had all been made in light of current resources, but the data collection would help future changes.
