Saturday saw the third session of the 31^st Congress of Strait Journalists which was held in Jerez. The congress was organised by the Campo de Gibraltar Press Association.

During the congress, Dominique Searle, Editor of the Gibraltar Chronicle, handed over a prize named after his late father and former Chronicle Editor Jon Morgan Searle. The prize, named in his memory, was awarded to the Moroccan journalist Ahmed Biyuzan, for his work fostering good relationships between journalists from both continents.

Dominique Searle, addressing the congress, focused his speech on the need for newspapers to modernise without compromising the quality of the content produced. He said that “politicians are broadcasting their ideas via social networks and newspapers are reporting on this word for word,” warning that this might make people think anyone can be a journalist.

Mr Searle also said Gibraltar was lucky enough to have been spared from the economic crisis affecting Spain, and gave some tips on how to run a newspaper in a more cost-efficient manner. He also said he was in favour of charging for online news content in order to ensure that this remains of the highest quality.
