Gibraltar and La Línea to Host Joint Bloomsday Event

On the 16th June 2026, La Línea and Gibraltar will embark on a unique cultural collaboration for Bloomsday.
Visitors can enjoy “A James Joyce Journey from Gibraltar to La Línea”, beginning at 11:00 in Gibraltar’s Alameda Gardens, followed by a free talk by Ulysses expert Charles Durante at the BookGem Bookshop. The programme continues with a traditional Bloomsday lunch at The Clipper pub in Irish Town, featuring “pie, mash & Guinness”.
Festivities will continue from 20:00 at the Museo Cruz Herrera, where Rebecca Calderon’s sequel, “¡A Mariana No Se Le Miente!”, introduces Spanish characters in a lively new production. Bloomsday will conclude at Pub Molly Bloom with traditional songs, music, and a pianist.
In 2022, La Línea de la Concepción celebrated its first Bloomsday in homage to Ulysses by James Joyce. The tradition has since continued and evolved into a lively programme of entertainment, with participants dressing in costume and following a literary trail through the town.
Ulysses follows a day in the life of Leopold Bloom in Dublin on 16 June 1904. The novel’s female protagonist is Bloom’s wife, Molly Bloom, a Gibraltarian whose mother, Lunita Laredo, is a native of La Línea. Molly fondly reminisces about her childhood in Gibraltar and the Campo, and the novel contains numerous references to places such as the market, bullring, Irish Town, and the Alameda Gardens, alongside Leopold Bloom’s desire to visit Gibraltar and Spain.
In 2025, Gibraltar held its first-ever Bloomsday event, during which local writer Rebecca Calderon wrote and produced an original play, “Molly’s a Llanita!”, performed beside the Molly Bloom statue in the Alameda Gardens.
