Dec 06 - National Dance Team To Compete In World Modern And Jazz Championships

The Gibraltar National Dance Team is all set to participate at the 2013 World Modern and Jazz Dance Championships. The event that will be staged in Mikolajki, Poland, will see over 1,400 dancers from 25 countries taking part. Dancers will be travelling from four continents to join in this spectacular event organised by the International Dance Organisation (IDO).

The Gibraltar National Dance Organisation has selected dancers from five different local dance schools. They are: Genyka Celecia, Tyron Walker, Dulcie Edwards, Duncan Grech, Francesca Morillo, Nicole Valverde, Lauren Schembri, Gianna Perera and Giovanella Vinales.

Gibraltar will see these performers represented in the Adult division and in the Solo Female, Solo Male, Duet and Group sections. The National Team’s choreographers for Poland 2013 include: GNDO Vice President Adrian Lopez, Team Captain Paulette Finlayson, Nichol Montovio, Gerald Rodriguez, Sabrina Abudarham, Jade Federico, Jarlene Jurado and Jolene Gomez.

GNDO President Seamus Byrne said: “This is the second time that Gibraltar will compete in Modern and Jazz IDO World Championships. As was proved last week in Germany, Gibraltar is a great Show Dance nation. However, by taking part in this competition, we are allowing our local dancers to improve on their technical ability. Hence why we feel it is very important to take part in other dance genres within the IDO.

“The GNDO is delighted with the way dancers as well as choreographers from different dance environments have pulled together to produce magnificent work. I, as well as my committee, are very proud that Team Gibraltar travels to Poland with the aim of delivering a high standard of dance and making the most of what certainly will be a great dancing educational experience.”

The Gibraltar National Dance Team is being led by GNDO Officials Adrian Lopez and Wendy Garro who will be accompanied by a team of 5 leaders and helpers. The National Team leave Gibraltar on Monday 9th December and will return on Sunday 15th December.
