Active Travel Month 2025

OTWO, STAG, and the World Netball Youth Club wrapped up Active Travel Month 2025 with a celebratory event at the Mediterranean Rowing Club last night.
A statement from OTWO follows below:
The initiative has been hailed as an overwhelming community success, following a month-long campaign encouraging people to replace short car journeys with walking, cycling and any other modes of active travel.
The evening began with remarks from event organiser Vanessa Byrne, who explained the purpose behind Active Travel Month and highlighted the incredible support the campaign has received in its pilot year. Vanessa also underlined the importance of supporting local charities, such as the Gibraltar Cardiac Association and the Gibraltar Diabetes Association, stating:
“We have two homes; our world and our body and an active lifestyle supports both.”
The event continued with words of encouragement from Minister for the Environment Dr. John Cortes, who praised the impact of the campaign in raising awareness and promoting sustainable lifestyles. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the organising team for their efforts and reaffirmed his commitment to improving Gibraltar’s infrastructure to make active travel more accessible in the future.
AMA was recognised as the campaign’s most supportive sponsor with organisors expressing her deepest gratitude, noting:
“We all know new initiatives can be risky for sponsors, and AMA has shown its commitment to a better environment by supporting initiatives that drive positive change. We are forever grateful for their trust in us.”
Emily, OTWO’s social media manager, then presented an overview of the community engagement achieved throughout the month. A total of 37 teams joined the challenge, logging nearly 88,000 kilometres on the Strava app. This was equivalent to circling the world 2.2 times or covering 23% of the distance from Gibraltar to the Moon. Team-building activities, social media sharing, and a collective spirit contributed to the remarkable outcome.
The programme also included presentations from The Observatory, a new local company specialising in data collection and practical applications, and from Asile Ltd, which partnered with the campaign to showcase the carbon emissions avoided through active travel during September. All participating clubs will receive a report detailing their total kilometres logged and carbon savings achieved.
From a total of 814 participants and 37 clubs, the following awards were presented: Individual Awards
• 1st Place – Francis Martinez
• 2nd Place – Simon Gatenby
• 3rd Place – Monika Newbound
• 4th Place – Darrell King
• 5th Place – Andrew Bonfante
Club Awards
• Top Sports Club – CROC
• Top NGO / Family / Community Club – GiBromptonians
• Top Government Department – GHA
• Top Private Company – Gibraltar Chronicle
• Overall Winner, Active Travel Month 2025 – Gibraltar Chronicle
The awards were presented by Minister for Culture and Tourims, Minister Santos, Minister for Sports, Minister Bruzon and Minister Dr. John Cortes, Minister for Environment.
The month-long campaign also raised substantial funds for local charities, with a total of £1,830 collected and equally donated to the Gibraltar Cardiac Association and Diabetes Gibraltar. Special guest Roxie joined the celebrations, helping to draw the raffle winners and adding to the festive atmosphere.
Closing the evening, organisor Vanessa Byrne thanked participants and partners for their incredible efforts, noting:
“This year is just the beginning. We are already 23% of the way to the Moon — so next year, let’s aim to reach it. From the Rock to the Moon!”
