Nov 11 - Merchant Navy Welfare Board AGM Held at Gibraltar Naval Base
The Merchant Navy Welfare Board recently held their Annual General Meeting in the Tower at the Naval Base.
The Board was established in 1948, although its predecessors date back to 1927. Today the Board has around 40 members subscribing to its Constitution. There are 15 Port Welfare Committees in the UK and one in Gibraltar.
The Board helps to co-ordinate charities and services that help seafarers and their families; this includes spiritual support services and financial support where appropriate.
Queens Harbour Master Lieutenant Commander Simeon Godfrey said, 'It is a privilege to be able to host the Merchant Navy Welfare Board in the Tower; they provide essential welfare services for seafarers in the UK and the Mediterranean through the Gibraltar Branch.'
