Parallels have been drawn between the Gibraltar Jubilee Flotilla and yesterday’s Jubilee Flotilla on the Thames. Now, although the London maritime pageant involved 1000 vessels and the Gibraltar Flotilla involves 100, it is important to note that there are major differences that make the Gibraltar Flotilla just as unique and special.
The Gibraltar Flotilla is just as safe and organised as the London Flotilla despite there being no Thames Barrier for protection. Our vessels will be breaking out into open waters in formation behind the Port Authority’s vessel General Eliott. This ship will be leading the pageant of vessels as they manoeuvre through the Bay of Gibraltar and around the Rock. The Port Authority’s ship Samorang, protecting and assisting from the rear, will follow the vessels as they navigate around Gibraltar.
With the Captains’ Briefing over, YGTV can now bring you the latest update on the Jubilee Flotilla as at 1045 at Ocean Village.
After a brief introduction from organisers Ros Astengo and Greg Butcher welcoming the boat crews from the 100 vessels taking to the sea for this celebration of Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee, Mike Toogood of the Port Authority ran through a list of the safety procedures to ensure that all vessels and crews are kept safe throughout the flotilla. A short briefing from the RGP then followed this where they explained that there would be a sizable presence of law enforcement vessels accompanying the flotilla given the recent unrest in the Bay of Gibraltar between the Guardia Civil and the Spanish Fishermen.
YGTV's team met up with owner and skipper of the MV Albany, one of the vessels involved in today's flotilla. Check out what he had to say about his vessel and about the Flotilla, celebrating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee here in Gibraltar.
Ocean Village's Diamond Jubilee Flotilla's Captain's Briefing is under way now. Addressing the Captains is Ros Astengo, event organiser, Greg Butcher, owner of Ocean Village and the Royal Gibraltar Police.
Minister for Culture, the Hon Mr Linares is attending the event. Minister Linares will be setting the flotilla off by sounding the official horn. The 115 boats will start to move off and in formation will sail around Gibraltar from Ocean Village, round to the Eastern Side, where they will turn around near Catalan Bay and then come back to Ocean Village.
It’s just gone 10:00am and YGTV are down in Ocean Village from where the Jubilee Flotilla will be departing at around midday. So far there is a large congregation of seafaring folk outside O’Reilley’s enjoying a Captains’ Breakfast to get energy levels up before the official Captains’ Briefing.
There is a definite buzz in the air and the excitement is palpable. Stay tuned throughout the day for regular updates, photos and footage from this Special Jubilee Celebration.
