Mar 08 - Chief Minister Meets PSOE Politicians

The Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, met with Salvador de la Encina, the PSOE representative for Cadiz, in his offices at No 6 today.

The meeting was also attended by La Linea PSOE representative Miguel Tornay, Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia and Minister for Health and the Environment, Dr John Cortes.

Some of the topics discussed included the issue of licenses for recreational fishing, the upcoming EU referendum, Brexit and the comments made by Caretaker Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo regarding Gibraltar during a radio interview.

Sr Encina said that while he respects the UK’s democratic decision to hold a referendum, he hopes the UK, and therefore Gibraltar, remain in the EU for a number of reasons, including the fact that there are many Spanish people who come to Gibraltar for work every day. He also cited good economic relations and the Spanish tourism industry which sees 15 million British tourists arriving each year as other important factors.

Mr Picardo said he welcomed Sr Encina’s commitment to continuing good relations with Gibraltar, and both agreed that the only way to maintain this is by open dialogue to find solutions for communities on both sides of the frontier.
