Editor's Blog July 26th 2012 - Flagging About

The humble flag, a piece of coloured cloth stuck to a pole, has more power to unite, divide and ignite people than any incendiary comments uttered by anyone anywhere. Flags represent identity, culture and dominions. They are a source of pride. Take the USA as a prime example.

School children are required to pledge allegiance to the flag every morning before lessons commence. The American national anthem (The Star Spangled Banner) is all about their flag and what it represents. Every government building in America is bedecked with tens of flags and usually flies a giant bed sheet of a flag from its rooftop flagpole. Many houses in suburbia, and beyond, fly flags from flagpoles in their gardens or from the roof of the porch. This is not an indulgence in cliché; this is anecdotal, seen first-hand on many an occasion. America is covered in flags; just in case the people in the streets suddenly forget which country they’re in!

I’m a great fan of Wimbledon. For two weeks of the year I like to immerse myself in the furore that surrounds the greatest tennis tournament in the world. Strawberries and cream at the ready and BBC on the telly… Will Murray make it this year? Of course not. Nevertheless, it’s an enjoyable fortnight of top-notch tennis, and that’s what it’s all about really isn’t it?

Well there’s that, and then there are the moments to savour, such as the moment a line judge gets smacked in the face by a high velocity serve, or the moment when John Wilfried Tsonga has his nuts rearranged by a powerful forehand drive from almost point blank range. Then there’s always the amusing wide shot of the spectators following the ball during a long rally, looking like 15,000 deranged Centre Court Muppets with nervous twitches furiously jolting their heads from side to side in pursuit of the ball. This is how I feel now as I bounce from one political press release to another.

Eddie just hasn’t got the time!

“How can we ever have time, if we never take time?” Taking the time to write the blog sometimes seems to be more difficult than I originally imagined. Today I have simply been snowed under. But have you ever had that sort of day where you feel you haven’t stopped but you feel you haven’t really accomplished anything?

This morning started badly, ended worse, lunchtime didn’t exist, by 4:30pm I thought I should really grab a sandwich and then by 7pm I’m thinking I better write the blog.

It’s Hot and it’s getting hotter!

Not just talking about the weather and the temperature, but talking about the escalating situation that, like it or not, will affect us all very shortly. Last week, including the weekend, there were several incidents that have resulted in the increasing tensions between Gibraltar and Spain. The end result, the Foreign Office has even got involved now and released a statement against Spain.

So let’s look at the incidents, two Gibraltar vessels have been “targeted” by Spanish authorities. The first, which seemed to be an exclusive story in the Panorama, describes how a family enjoying the day out on their boat for the cavalcade, in Spanish waters, were approached by the Guardia Civil, were spoken to in an aggressive manner and decided to try to outrun the Spanish authorities (in Spanish waters) and get back to Gibraltar.

Sports, Exercise, Food and being fat!

It’s all go in sports this week. I’ve been looking back over the week’s news and it has been really nice to see that the Gibraltar Sports… Men and Women… have been very busy. We have had Basketball, Hockey, a gymnast going to the Olympics and the GFA are playing Portsmouth tonight.

All these sporting events in one week, not all the best results, but as we were all taught when we were kids, “it’s the taking part that counts”. What made me chuckle is, all these sports “people” (is that the correct non-sexist term), all these sporting events, and yet according to the Minister for Health, most of us are fat! Surely these super fit sporty types can help round down the average?
