The Government has said that it is clear that the GSD “have still to learn the simple lesson that people in glass houses should not throw stones.”
The Government has said that it is clear that the GSD “have still to learn the simple lesson that people in glass houses should not throw stones.”
The GSD has today said that the media reports that at the beginning of this year the Government signed contracts with MAN Diesel & Turbo for the provision of six engines for the LNG power station to be built "barely 300 meters away" from Waterport Terraces and not much further from Harbour Views, “demonstrates that the Government has been hell bent on proceeding with the project even without the relevant safety reports being in place.” The GSD also points out that in addition to the contract for the engines with MAN Diesel and Turbo, the Government had also already signed contracts with Bouygues Energies & Services SAS for the construction of the power station.
The GSD says it wishes Selwyn Figueras all the best in the future. The party says it “recognises and acknowledges the very useful contribution” which he has made during the course of the 2011 general election campaign which saw him elected as an MP for the first time. The party adds that his parliamentary contributions should also be recognised “not only because he has held the Government to account on many issues particularly on traffic and the long awaited Traffic Plan but also for the manner in which he has discharged those duties with common sense and humour.”
Opposition MP Selwyn Figueras has this afternoon made public his intention to leave frontline politics and not offer his name as a candidate for this year’s general election. Mr Figueras has served for four years as the GSD’s Shadow Spokesman for Justice, Traffic, Transport and Planning. He says that he has opted to prioritise time with his young and growing family. This is his statement in full:
The GSD adds its voice to that of Government in celebration of the life and achievements of Sir Joshua Hassan.
