Sep 27 - Linares Presents Gibraltar Fair and National Day Charity Funds

linaresCulture Minister Steven Linares this morning presented cheques to the value of £7000 this morning to a number of charities involved in the Gibraltar Fair and National Day festivities. These included the Catholic Education Service, the Gibraltar Lions Club, the Psychological Support Group and St. John’s Ambulance.

Commenting on the matter, Minister Linares, who was accompanied by SDGG Chairman Dennis Matthews, noted that the charities provided the fair with a unique local flavour. He added, ‘Her Majesty’s Government is indebted to those charities and to other non-charitable organisations and volunteer groups, because of the variety and support they bring to our annual festivities.’

Sep 20 - Cleaning Up the World Once More

cutwTomorrow sees Gibraltar’s 9th participation in the inspiring global Clean up the World campaign.  CUTW Australia, founders of this great campaign say, “The estimated 35 million volunteers, who take part in Clean Up the World, are taking responsibility for the environment – and the effects are felt not only in the community in which they take place, but right across the planet. Our campaign theme - Our Place… Our Planet… Our Responsibility - highlights how local action – taken by every community and volunteer involved in a Clean Up the World activity – has a global impact.”

Sep 20 - Childline Calls for Appropriate Adult Volunteers

childlineIn an effort to provide more Appropriate Adults for local charity Childline Gibraltar, the team has been ‘training the trainers’. These adults include volunteers who make themselves available at all times to support vulnerable juveniles who have been detained by the police and whose parents or carers are not available.  Appropriate Adults also assist with communication between the detained person and the police. It is important to stress that this service has been very much welcomed by the RGP and HM Customs. The Appropriate Adult role was first introduced under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act, the principles of which have been adopted in Gibraltar.

Sep 17 - Charity Trek Success

vinets charity trekGenevieve and Fabian Vinet successfully completed their 50-kilometer Thames Path Challenge Trek on Saturday. Despite having set themselves a target of completing the Walk within twelve hours, they managed to finish the entire Challenge in exactly 10 hours and 30 minutes.

‘The faster pace did come at a price,’ explains Fabian. ‘At around the 26km mark the pain set in and after stopping for lunch at the 29km point, I was literally almost unable to move and for a few minutes thought Genevieve would have to continue without me. Thankfully the painkillers and muscle-relaxant spray helped, as did the adrenaline and determination, and so we managed to soldier on.’

Sep 16 - Charity Cyclists Receive Warm Welcome at Cancer Relief Centre

cyclistsLate last week cyclists Wayne Meenagh, Lee Vivian and Harry Meenagh received a heartening welcome at the Cancer Relief Centre as they completed their 5000 km charity cycle from the Artic Circle in Norway, to Gibraltar.

15-year-old Harry was greeted by a selection of peers from his school year. The team has so far raised £15,000 for the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity based in the UK, the Jersey Hospice and Cancer Relief Gibraltar.
